✦ JAPANESE PALM THIMBLE (Sara-tsuki Yubinuki) ✦ The traditional sashiko thimble that uses your whole palm — not just a fingertip. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌WHAT IS A JAPANESE PALM THIMBLE? Unlike Western dome-shaped thimbles that cap a fingertip, the Japanese palm thimble (sara-tsuki yubinuki) is worn like a ring at the base of your middle finger — with the small textured "coin" facing the palm of your hand. Instead of pushing the needle with your fingertip, you catch the needle's eye against the dimpled coin and push with the broad muscle of your palm. This is how Japanese sashiko stitchers have loaded multiple stitches onto a long needle for centuries — running stitch after stitch, without strain. Once you try it, you understand why it's been the tool of choice for sashiko, kogin-zashi, hand quilting, and traditional Japanese needlework. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌HOW TO USE IT i. WEAR IT Slide the ring onto your dominant middle finger, all the way down to the base. The dimpled coin should sit on the palm side. ii. POSITION THE NEEDLE Hold a sashiko needle between thumb and index finger. Rest the back (eye end) of the needle against the dimpled coin. iii. PUSH WITH YOUR PALM Rock the needle into the fabric using the broad muscle of your palm — not your fingertip. Load 3–5 stitches onto the needle before pulling through. It feels awkward for the first few minutes, then it clicks — and you'll never go back to a fingertip thimble for long-running stitches. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌PRODUCT DETAILS · Material: Brass (unplated, natural finish) · Style: Coin / palm thimble (sara-tsuki) · Band: Adjustable open ring — fits most adults · Coin diameter: Approx. 18–20 mm · Surface: Densely dimpled to catch the needle eye · Color: Warm gold brass tone The adjustable open band lets you gently squeeze or widen the ring to fit any finger size — no sizing guesswork required. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌WHY BRASS? · Solid, satisfying weight — feels grounded on the hand · Warm, natural color that ages beautifully over time · No nickel plating that wears off after months of use · The same metal tradition Japanese stitchers have trusted for generations Brass develops a soft patina with use — many stitchers prize the way a well-used thimble takes on the character of the hand that wears it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌PERFECT FOR ✓ Sashiko (especially Hitome-zashi & Moyō-zashi) ✓ Visible mending and boro stitching ✓ Hand quilting & patchwork ✓ Kogin-zashi (counted-thread embroidery) ✓ Long-running stitch projects on cotton & denim ✓ Stitchers with sore fingertips from regular thimbles ✓ A thoughtful gift for the Japanese-craft lover ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌WHO IT'S FOR (AND WHO IT'S NOT) ✓ BEST FOR: · Long sashiko needles (45 mm and up) · Multiple stitches loaded at once · Cotton, linen, denim, and medium-thick fabrics ✗ LESS IDEAL FOR: · Single stitch-by-stitch sewing (use a ring thimble) · Very thick leather (use a leather thimble instead) · Cross stitch or counted thread on Aida cloth ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌FIT & ADJUSTMENT The band is an open ring (not a closed circle), so you can: · Gently squeeze inward for a snug fit on smaller fingers · Carefully widen the opening for larger fingers To resize: hold the ring flat with both hands and bend slowly. Avoid sharp twists — brass bends easily but should be adjusted gradually. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌CARE · Wipe with a dry cloth after each session · Brass naturally darkens over time — this is the beloved patina, not damage · To restore shine: polish gently with a brass cleaner or a paste of lemon juice and salt · Store in a dry place; avoid prolonged moisture ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌SHIPPING · Ships from Japan with tracking · Carefully packed in a protective pouch · Estimated delivery: see shipping details above ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌IMPORTANT NOTES · Brass contains a small amount of copper and zinc. If you have a known metal allergy, please review carefully before purchasing. · Color may vary slightly between batches due to the natural finishing of brass. · This is a tool, not jewelry — designed to do its job beautifully for years of stitching. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌MORE FROM MA NO CRAFT Pair this thimble with: · Misuya Chubei Sashiko Needles (Kyoto, since 1819) · Stick & Stitch Pattern Sheets (3 editions) · Sashiko Starter Kit (includes this thimble plus needles, thread, denim, and pattern sheets) · Sashiko Pattern Book PDFs (digital download) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ▌ABOUT MA NO CRAFT MA NO CRAFT is a small studio in Japan curating authentic Japanese craft tools and patterns for makers worldwide.
